The Kohlhöfen synagogue was a synagogue in Hamburg's Neustadt district . It was built in 1859 and demolished in 1934.

history

After the Ashkenazi community grew, especially since equality from 1849, the existing synagogues in Elbstraße (Altonaer Schule) and Neuer Steinweg were no longer sufficient.

The architect Alfred Rosengarten , who had already planned the synagogue in Kassel and others, was commissioned with the construction . The building was built in the round arch style, consisted of yellow brick and was crowned with a drum dome . The inside was completely painted.

It was only during the planning phase that it was decided to erect the building in such a way that the facade could be seen from the outside. The original plan was to cover the synagogue behind the buildings of the Talmud Torah School . This made it the first synagogue in Hamburg that was visible from the street.

Since 1869, the German-Israelite Synagogue Association had its own administration for the Orthodox synagogues within the German-Israelite community. This association also paid the religious officials and the maintenance of the synagogue.

Since the end of the 19th century more and more parishioners moved to the new parts of the city outside the old city wall, especially to the Grindelviertel , the synagogue lost more and more visitors. The Bornplatz Synagogue, the new main synagogue of the communities , had existed there since 1906 . In 1934 the Kohlhöfen synagogue was sold to the city for demolition.
