history

The synagogue was built in 1911/1912 as a private synagogue for Orthodox Jews according to plans by the architect Ernst Dorn. It was founded by Betty Sophie Jacobsohn (1870–1942). But as early as 1915 the house of God became an official synagogue of the Jewish community. During the pogrom night on November 9, 1938, the synagogue burned down from the inside and was opened during the Second World War . a. misused as a laundry. In 1947 the prayer room was re-inaugurated and the church became one of the most important synagogues in Germany. In the course of a restoration in 2013/2014, the synagogue was given back its original wall paintings from 1912.

In the 1930s, the renowned musicologist, writer and painter Arno Nadel was the choirmaster in the Pestalozzistraße synagogue. From 1947 until his death, Estrongo Nachama was initially cantor and later chief cantor of this synagogue. The Pestalozzistraße synagogue is the only synagogue in the world whose rite still consists entirely of compositions by the important synagogue composer Louis Lewandowski , who had a decisive influence on the rite of German Jewry since the mid-19th century. The liberal church service with organ and mixed choir was originally composed for the Oranienburger Strasse synagogue . After this synagogue was destroyed, the tradition of liberal German Jews was continued in the Pestalozzistraße synagogue after 1945.

Important rabbis of the synagogue were u. a. Arthur Liebermann (1919–1924), Emil Nathan Levy (1919–1934), Steven Schwarzschild (1948–1950), Nathan Peter Levinson (1950–1953), Cuno Lehrmann (1960–1971), Manfred Lubliner (1972–1980), Ernst M. Stein (1980–1998) and Tovia Ben-Chorin (2009–2015).
