Drawing of the synagogue in Verden (19th century)

The synagogue in Verden , the district town of the Verden district in Lower Saxony , was inaugurated at the end of August 1858. The synagogue stood in the area of the Johanniswall, near today's justice center.

The Jewish elementary school and a mikvah were also housed in the synagogue building.

time of the nationalsocialism

In the early morning hours of November 10, 1938 , three men, presumably members of the SA leadership school in Etelsen , set fire to the synagogue and disappeared again. The fire brigade called by neighbors was instructed by a Gestapo employee not to put out the fire. After the cult objects were removed, the interior was smashed and the fire started. The synagogue burned down completely, only the outer walls remained.

Commemoration

Remnants of the wall of the former synagogue were discovered during civil engineering work on Johanniswall in 2011. The basement rooms with the mikveh were exposed.

Since 2015, an information board at the synagogue has been commemorating the Jewish community in Verden.
