Vulitsa Chanharskaya Synagogue (Babruysk)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Synagogue in Babruysk (2007)

The synagogue with the address Wulitsa Tschanharskaja ( Belarusian вуліца Чангарская , different information on house number 31, 26 or 10) in Babrujsk , a Belarusian town in Mahiljouskaja Woblasz , was built at the beginning of the 20th century. The original name is unknown.

history

The building was built at the beginning of the 20th century (elsewhere the beginning of the 19th century is mentioned) and was used as a synagogue until 1932. The Soviet authorities then closed the synagogue and the building had various other uses (mill, warehouse, cycling center). After a fire in 1969 it was abandoned and fell into disrepair.

architecture

The synagogue is made of red bricks. Only a few walls are still standing. Some of the keel arched windows are still preserved, but partially bricked up. The main hall had tall windows; the vestibule with the gallery above is each lower.

Usage today

In the mid-2010s, work began on converting the square and the remains of the building into an open-air museum about Jewish life in Babrujsk. This was completed in 2019.
