Synagogue on Delos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The synagogue on Delos (scientifically referred to as CG 80) is a ruin on Delos, which in its current form is dated to the first century BC. It is the oldest synagogue that can also be verified as a building.

history

From the literature and inscriptions from Delos it is known with certainty that Jews and Samaritans lived on the island.

The synagogue is located on the east coast of the island and city of Delos, in a so far little excavated urban area, but which was predominantly used as a residential area. The building is located directly on the sea and is 28.30 × 30.70 m in size. Its east side has not been preserved because it slipped into the sea. The building was probably originally a residential building. In the first century BC There were conversions that turned the building into a place of worship. A total of five construction stages could be distinguished.

It consists of two large rooms furnished with marble benches, one of which is a kind of throne room with a marble throne . Votive steles with the inscription: God, the highest, were found near the building . This is how Jews and Samaritans in the Diaspora referred to their God.

The building was excavated from 1912 to 1913 under the direction of André Plassart . The architecture and furnishings are proof that the building is a synagogue. Some researchers disagree with the use, pointing out that the equipment could theoretically have been moved there from another building.
