Facade of the synagogue of Bordeaux

The synagogue in Bordeaux is one of the most beautiful and largest synagogues in France . The synagogue is located on rue du Grand Rabbin Joseph Cohen, not far from the Musée d'Aquitaine .

history

It was built between 1880 and 1882 according to the plans of the architect Charles Durand and was inaugurated on September 5, 1882 (the 21st Elul 5642 according to the Jewish calendar).

Durand kept the interior of the synagogue in an oriental style and bears a strong resemblance to the Berlin synagogue in Oranienburger Strasse , which was built from 1859 to 1866 according to plans by Eduard Knoblauch .

The interior dimensions of the synagogue in Bordeaux are: length 36 m, width 26 m and height 16 m.

During the Nazi occupation in World War II , the splendid interior was completely destroyed on January 10, 1944, and the synagogue was simultaneously converted into a prison for the Jews destined for transport to the extermination camps .

On the right wall of the synagogue forecourt today, a plaque commemorates the names of the 560 displaced by the German occupation army.
