Syndesmophyte

In medicine, syndesmophytes are understood as a form of new bone formation ( osteophytes ), which remodel the outer edge of the intervertebral discs and thus restrict the mobility of the vertebral bodies to one another. They differ from the spondylophytes in that they grow vertically.

Occurrence

Syndesmophytes are the key radiological findings in ankylosing spondylitis ( Bechterew's disease ). Therefore, in the more advanced stage, the body tries to fix the spine .
