Syndrome analysis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term syndrome analysis goes back to the Russian neuropsychologist Alexander R. Lurija . It represents a method for understanding the causes and effects of neuropsychological syndromes .

Syndrome analysis is developed by Lurija as a methodological basis for his neuropsychological research. It begins with the systemic description of a comprehensive complex of symptoms in order to build on this, taking anatomical , physiological and biographical data into account , to arrive at an understanding of the functionality of the symptoms with regard to certain neurobiological , psychological or socio-cultural conditions under which the syndrome emerges or becomes conspicuous becomes.

Lurija contrasts the classic, deficient view of syndromes as failure, error or other pathological occurrences with a neuropsychological theory of complex functional systems, in which the lack of brain functions is not assumed as the cause of the occurrence of a certain symptom complex, but a changed form of their interaction as a result of local brain injuries.

This makes it possible to understand a syndrome not only as an expression of a deficiency, but also as the origin of excess, as the New York neuropsychologist Oliver Sacks shows in his impressive case histories.
