Synod of Benevento

The Synod of Benevento began on Friday, March 28th and ended three days later on Monday, March 31st, 1091.

General

The Synod of Benevento was convened by Pope Urban II and contains four canons , the first three relating to internal church affairs and the last increasing the importance of Ash Wednesday .

Canon 1

Election to bishop

Those who do not live a lifestyle consistent with the holy ordines should not be elected bishop. A sub-deacon may only hold this office in exceptional cases, but requires the permission of a metropolitan or the Pope.

Canon 2

Reasons for dismissing chaplains

A chaplain should be removed from office for two reasons:

  1. He does his job without the bishop's permission.
  2. Again without the consent of the bishop, he draws the tithe from lay people.

Canon 3

Admission and ordination of clerics

No cleric may be accepted and ordained by another bishop without a letter of recommendation or the permission of his bishop .

Canon 4

Lent

After the Synod met during Lent , the following provisions were passed:

  • No layperson is allowed to eat meat after Ash Wednesday.
  • All men and women are to receive the Ash Cross on Ash Wednesday.
  • A marriage ban is pronounced from the Sunday Septuagesima to the octave of Easter, and from the first Sunday of Advent to the octave of Epiphany .
