System of license plates (Netherlands)

In the case of the Dutch license plates, which were newly introduced in 1951, the provincial membership is not evident, but a system of vehicle license plates can be recognized. Depending on which vehicle category (cars, motorcycles, mopeds, trucks, trailers or semi-trailers) a vehicle belongs, you can determine when the respective license plates were assigned. The group combinations (sidecodes, Dutch kentekenreeks ) help to determine the year of admission. The information in this article is quite extensive. Sidecodes

The way in which the letters and numbers are arranged on Dutch license plates is assigned according to certain regulations. First, 1951 began with license plates in which two letters were followed by two two-digit numbers (XX-99-99). Since this is the first prescribed combination of letters and digits, it is known - also and especially officially in the Netherlands - as Sidecode 1 .

The side codes in detail

Sidecode 1

Basics :
The Side Code 1 was used all vehicle categories then existing for the license.
Initial letters :
The initial letters were assigned in the following order: N, P, R, S, T, U, V, X, Z, A, B, D, E, F, G, H, J and M.
Added initial letters :
With the introduction of the marking of semitrailers (trailers of tractor units) and trailers were assigned the initials O and W in 1963.
Semi-trailers: O
Trailers: W
Second letters :
The second letters have been assigned to the different vehicle categories:
Trucks with a width of up to 2.20 m: A, F, J, N and S
Trucks with a width of 2.20 m: B
Cars: D, G, K, P, T, U and X
Motorcycles: E, H, L, R and Z
Changes to the second letters :
From 1955/56, the second letter U was no longer assigned to cars, but to motorcycles (from SU ).
From 1962, cars were assigned far more second letters than before, namely backwards Z, V, U, S, R, N, M, L, J, H, F and E (from MZ to EF ). The motorcycles were therefore only assigned license plates up to the initial letter Z, the trucks up to the initial letter D, but those with the initial letters E to M only had the second letter B.
Interesting facts :
The combinations DD and JT were reserved for vehicles from other countries were introduced. These were often vehicles that had been involved in accidents, then bought cheaply by Dutch people and put on the market after repairs. However, vehicles whose registration papers had been lost were also given one of these letter combinations. The resale value of these vehicles was significantly lower than that of the other vehicles. In the vernacular, vehicles with the code DD were referred to as German Delle (ndl. Duitse deuk).
The letter combination ZZ was given to vehicles with a special permit.

Sidecode 2

Basics :
The Side Code 2 received only cars, lorries and trailers.
Initial letters :
Cars: A, B, D, E, F, G, H, J, M, N, P, R, S, T, U, V, X and Z
Trucks: A, B, D, E, F , G, H, J, M, N, P, R, S, T, U, V, X and Z

Second letter :
The second letter B was assigned to the trucks. The cars were given the second letters A, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P (only up to MP ), R, S, T, U, V, X and Z. The trailers received the letters D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, R, S, T, U, V, X and Z for the leading W. Interesting
facts :
The last pair of letters assigned to a car was ZS . The letter combinations ZT , ZU , ZV and ZX were still used years later for vehicles imported from other countries and for vehicles whose vehicle registration documents had been lost. The letter combination ZZ has been assigned to vehicles with special permits since December 2016.

Sidecode 3

Basics :
The Side Code 3 received only cars, trucks and trailers.

The second letter B was assigned to the trucks. The cars were given the second letters A, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, R, S, T, U, V, X and Z. The trailers were given the leading W the Letters D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L, N, P, R, S, T, V, X and Z.
Interesting facts :
The last license plate issued to a car was XX . The letter combinations XZ and from ZA to ZX were still used years later for vehicles imported from other countries and for vehicles whose vehicle registration documents have been lost. The letter combination ZZ was not assigned.

Sidecode 4

Basics :
The Side Code 4 was required for the characteristic of all vehicle categories then existing.
Initial letters :

The letter combination ZP was not displayed. After the license plate ZN-99-ZZ followed ZR-01-BB. The last hallmark of this series was ZX - ?? - LK. The letter combinations VY , VZ , ZY and ZZ were not displayed.

The Side Code 5 was required for the license of nearly all vehicle categories then existing.

The last license plate issued was ZN-NX - ??. The letter combinations ZP to ZZ were not displayed.
Special feature : No license plate is required in the Netherlands
for a motor vehicle with restricted or limited speed (Dutch: motorrijtuig met beperkte snelheid ). In special cases, especially if it is a converted vehicle, a license plate is required. This is an identifier in the form MM-BS-99, where 99 can stand for any number. Identifiers with a letter and a number or two letters at the end are also possible.

Sidecode 6

Motorcycle license plate with the side code 6

Basics :
The Side Code 6 was and is so far spent on the characteristics of cars, light trucks, trailers and motorcycles.

The MM-BB license plates mentioned for sidecode 5 are also available for sidecode 6.
Starting with license plate 01-VH-NK, the letter K was also used on small trucks.

Sidecode 7

Basics :
The Side Code 7 has been spent on the characteristics of light trucks, for the cars and the first series of the characteristics of the motor-assisted bicycles and mopeds. License plates with the side code 7 are currently issued for the plates of heavy trucks.

Export license plate (until 2012)

Basics :
Because of the similar number-letter combination of the export codes, the side code 8 was not assigned with all letter groups. Initially, it was only approved for light trucks and delivery vans, as well as for cars.
First letter :
cars: K, S, T, X and Z
light trucks and vans: V
Second letters :
B, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, N, P, R, S, T, V, X and Z.
The letter combinations KSD and KSS to ZSD and ZSS have been withdrawn. Thus, the affected persons were assigned new license plates, since in sidecode 8 the letter pairs SD and SS are together and separated from the first letter.
Special features : No license plates are required in the Netherlands
for a tractor (Dutch: landbouwtrekker ) and a forestry tractor (Dutch: bosbouwtrekker ). In special cases, especially if it is a converted vehicle, a license plate is required. This is an identifier in the form 9-LBT-99, where 99 can stand for any number (see also side code 5).
The VVD combination does not apply to the small trucks .

Since the letter pairs SD and SS are together and not separated from the first letters in sidecode 11 , the combinations with the letter pairs SD and SS are not assigned. The combinations with S-99-D and S-99-S , where 99 stands for each number, are also omitted.

Sidecode 13

Basics :
The Side Code 13 is awarded to vehicles in border traffic with the letter pair GV.

Hints

Two letters are given in each of the following lists. They are:

• for side codes 1 to 3: the only two letters
• with side codes 4 and 5: the two letters in front
• with sidecode 6: the two letters in the middle
• with sidecode 7: the first two of the three letters
• with sidecode 8: the first two of the three letters
• with sidecode 9: the two first letters
• with sidecode 10: the front and the first of the last two letters
• with sidecode 11: the first two of the three letters
• with sidecode 13: the two letters in the middle

In the lists there is a combination of letters (two letters) only when the year is given. This does not rule out that this combination of letters was still used in the following years, especially for motorcycles and semi-trailers.

The license plates for cars, motorcycles and trucks were introduced in 1951.

The license plates for trailers and semi-trailers were introduced in 1963. At first they only existed as a square on a point with the two letters in the first row on a red background in white lettering, in the second row separated by a hyphen, the two pairs of digits and a two-digit in the last row Number or a letter and a single-digit number or the letter combination XX with the specification of the maximum weight applicable to the trailer. Here mean:

• a two-digit number (weight up to 9.9 t): specification in 100 kg units; the number is multiplied by 100
• a letter and a single-digit number (weight up to 31.95 kg):

A = 100 kg, B = 110 kg, C = 120 kg, D = 130 kg etc. up to Z = 310 kg (without I, O, Q and Y)

The number is used for further division into 1 kg increments.

• the two letters XX (weight over 31.950 kg) without further information

Only from around the year 2000 onwards did the trailers have to have their yellow license plate at the rear - exceptions apply to light-weight car trailers. Before that, they had the license plate number of the towing vehicle in black letters on a white background.

The current license plates for the mopeds were only introduced in September 2005.
