Systole

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As systole ( Greek  συστολή "contraction") is in the ancient Verslehre one from the meter forced reduction of a long vowel or diphthong called. As an example, the following verse by Virgil ( Eklogen 4,61), in which the "e" in "tulerunt" is shortened systolic:

matri longa decem tul e runt fastidia menses

The opposite is the diastole ( διαστολή "expansion"), in which the meter forces the lengthening of a short vowel.
