In 3D computer graphics , a scene is a three-dimensional description of objects, light sources, material properties and the position and direction of view of a virtual observer. The modeling of objects within a scene is the subject of geometric modeling , the calculation of an image from a scene is done by means of image synthesis .

In a scene, objects are often grouped hierarchically and summarized in a scene graph .

3D graphics programs often save primitives hierarchically or in list form in a certain file format . Special forms are scene description languages (SDL), which are not limited to the mere listing of primitives, but describe a 3D scene with a kind of programming language . Examples of SDLs are the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) or the C -like language used by POV-Ray .
