Tāne Mahuta
Tāne Mahuta is a New Zealand kauri tree ( Agathis australis ) from the araucaria family. At 51.2 m, the tree is one of the largest trees still alive today and is the largest known kauri tree. Its circumference near the ground is 13.77 m, which corresponds to a diameter of almost 4.4 m. The trunk height from the ground to the base of the crown is 17.68 m, the trunk volume 244.5 m³. Only at a height of 18 m does the tree show branches.
The Tāne Mahuta, overgrown with epiphytes, is located in the Waipoua Forest in the Northland region on the North Island of New Zealand and was only discovered in 1928 by Nicholas Yakas during road construction work. The name of the tree comes from the Māori language and is named after the god of the forest Tāne of the same name . The age of the tree is not known.
