TAHEA is a Tanzanian non-profit and non-governmental organization founded by 17 housekeepers in March 1980 . The number of members has now risen to over 1,000.

Goals and worldview

TAHEA supports the idea of a democratic society with improved, sustainable living conditions and a strong economic base, especially in the food supply. In this sense, TAHEA supports individuals, families and entire communities in the areas of housekeeping , social work and emancipation , through further education, training and information procurement . To achieve this, TAHEA employs experts who initiate, monitor and evaluate development processes, but also works closely with other organizations that are active in the same sectors. In the case of emancipation, TAHEA, together with other organizations, played a key role in suggesting draft laws for possible equality, for example in the “Land Bill”, to parliamentarians and the population.

Projects

A total of 7 projects in the fields of agriculture , education and health are managed and implemented.

Agriculture

3 projects in the districts of Sengerema and Ukerewe include the promotion of the cultivation of sweet potatoes , vegetables and cassava to better cover the need for essential nutrients (especially vitamin A ) as well as the safe handling of food and opportunities to generate income. This also includes training in further processing and storage processes as well as further training to reduce harvest losses and improve marketing. Projects: "Sweet Potato Promotion Project", "Enhanced Homestead Food Production", "Great Lakes Cassava Initiatives Project".

In the districts of Missungwi and Kwimba, TAHEA is funding a project to promote the cultivation of the physic nut , which is used to produce oil (e.g. for oil lamps or stoves), soap , fuel and fertilizer. Oil and soap can be sold, but they can also meet their own needs and help to reduce the deforestation. Training courses in food safety and housekeeping are also offered here. Project: "JANI (Jatropha, Agriculture and Nutrition Initiative)".

education

In the districts of Ilemela and Nyamagana, the “Early Childhood Development” project enables 3,600 children to attend pre-school. The project includes activating donors and actors, raising awareness of early childhood developments , training teachers and developing child-oriented learning and teaching, as well as implementing the necessary facilities. Furthermore, people are mobilized to take part in microfinance projects (a maximum of 30 people are paid into an education fund, which, for example, enables them to pay school fees), carry out evaluations and raise parents' awareness of children's rights.

The MVC (Most Vulnerable Children) project in the Ilemela district is a partnership between TAHEA and CDIS. It gives girls access to secondary school for girls by paying school and test fees as well as uniforms.

health

The "Rural Community Health" project promotes improved sanitation (e.g. with water), sustainable use of the environment and health issues for children. In this context, 600 community members were trained and educated in cooperation with the regional hospital. The project is currently being handed over to the local authorities.

Microfinance

Discussion of a community participating in the microfinance project

Microfinance instruments are used in each of the seven projects. They make it possible to save money where there is no access to banks and thus also give the opportunity to invest in the health (in the event of illness) and in the education of the children. In addition, the microcredit instruments, for example, give farmers the opportunity to invest money (e.g. a trip to the market) in order to then sell or process their products at a profit. As already mentioned, the micro-financial instruments play a major role, especially in the educational projects: They guarantee teachers their income and families the opportunity to pay school fees even in the event of bottlenecks

Targeted population

The projects target a total of 25,495 people. These are divided into 1,013 groups. The microfinance instruments accumulate a total of approximately $ 483,000, with 15,000 people borrowing in 2012. The average size of a microfinance group is 25 people, which guarantees secure payment morals, since the villagers would “lose face” if they didn't repay.
