The TCG Anadolu is a planned aircraft carrier or amphibious assault ship of the Turkish Navy . The ship is scheduled to enter service in 2021. It's identical to the Spanish Navy flagship Juan Carlos I .
history
In 2013, the decision was made in Turkey to buy a helicopter carrier with an order volume of around 1 billion dollars . The ability to carry aircraft was not included in the original plans. Ultimately, the plans were changed and a launch catapult for aircraft, which would not be needed in a pure helicopter carrier, was included in the planning. The tender was won by the Spanish-Turkish consortium Sedef-Navantia; the ship developed by the Spanish company is built under license by the Turkish manufacturer. The Anadolu was commissioned in 2015. A year later, construction began in the Sedef shipyard in Istanbul. Commissioning is scheduled for 2021. Originally, the Anadolu was to be equipped with new American-made F-35 fighter jets . However, since the USA terminated the purchase agreement in 2019 and thus excluded Turkey from the Joint Strike Fighter program , the future seems uncertain. The abbreviation TCG stands for Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Gemisi (Ship of the Republic of Turkey).
Technology and use
The crew is 243 strong and 1200 infantry can be transported. On two levels there are multi-purpose decks and hangar decks with a loading capacity of 12,000 tons on approximately 6000 m². A corrugated deck at the stern can accommodate four small landing craft or an LCAC . The flight deck is 202 m long and has a ski jump at the bow. There are six landing areas for VTOL aircraft or medium-sized helicopters, or four landing areas for heavy helicopters. As already mentioned, the aircraft fleet was to consist of F-35 fighter jets, but this was ended by the USA. Up to 20 aircraft can be carried without a helicopter. In the opposite case, up to 25 helicopters can be carried.
The Anadolu would be the first aircraft carrier and the largest ship in the history of Turkey. After its commissioning, it should give the Turkish armed forces the opportunity to operate worldwide. It will be the flag and command ship of the Turkish Navy.
