The day of the (free) book is a day of remembrance in Germany. It was first held in 1929 and celebrated on May 10, 1947 in Berlin by cultural representatives from all four sectors as a day of remembrance on the occasion of the book burning in Germany in 1933 . In the Soviet sector and later in the GDR, it was continued as "Free Book Day".

In the Federal Republic of Germany it was reintroduced in 1983 as "Book Day", among others by the German Book Trade Association .
