Taixi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Taixi site ( Chinese  台西 遗址 , Pinyin Táixī yízhǐ , English Site of Taixi / Taixi Site ) is an archaeological site named after the village Taixi ( Taixi cun ) from the middle and late Shang period in Gaocheng ( 藁 城 ), Hebei Province , People's Republic of China . It is dated to around 1300 BC. BC (± 100 years).

The vessel finds from the site provide important information about the early production of alcoholic beverages. Traces of yeast were discovered in residues weighing 8.5 kg in a large weng- type vessel , probably the sediment of a fermented drink. Other vessels have also been used in various processes of making alcoholic beverages.

Because of the importance of these finds for the history of the production of alcoholic beverages using yeast cultures, the site is also called Taixi niangjiu zuofang yizhi ( 台西 酿酒 作坊 遗址  - "Taixi alcoholic beverages production site").

Since 2006 it has been on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China in Hebei (6-8).
