Riggers
The rigging was used as a crank-driven, acoustic signaling device on sailing ships . The crank was used to operate a bellows via an eccentric , which stimulates a striking tongue to generate sound (presumably as with the Martin's trumpet ). The sound outlet is sometimes described as a copper bell.
Until the introduction of the steam engine and thus the possibility of the compressed air-operated diaphone or the electric fog horn , every larger sailing ship had to carry such a device.
Sometimes the device is associated with the lure (wind instrument) , but this is not justified in terms of function and application.
