The Tactical Training Command of the Air Force in Portugal (as its last name is) was an Air Force unit from 1965 to 1993 , which was responsible for the implementation of the Air Force training operations in Portugal. The command was dissolved at the end of 1993.

history

Due to the cramped airspace and the often unfavorable weather conditions over Central Europe, the German Air Force has been operating training facilities in more suitable areas of allied NATO countries since it was founded in the 1950s .

This also included a training facility stationed at Base Aérea Nº 11 near Beja in southern Portugal, the German Air Force Command Beja . It was initially installed in Cologne-Wahn in 1963 and moved to its final location in 1965. In the first years the Fiat G.91 was operated as a fixed aircraft type and was subordinate to the 3rd Air Force Division .

On January 1, 1980 the command was renamed the German Air Force Training Command Beja and in July of this year the G.91s were replaced by 18 alpha jets, with some of the "Ginas" no longer needed being transferred to the host Força Aérea Portuguesa (FAP) submitted. In an emergency, these alpha jets, together with other machines from Fighter Bomber Wing 49 in Fürstenfeldbruck, would have formed Fighter Bomber Wing 44 in Leipheim, which was squad in peace times . In April 1981 the command changed to the 1st Air Force Division .

In addition to the permanently stationed trainers, fighter planes stationed in Germany also regularly relocated to Beja for low-level flight and weapon deployment training, where there was also a German school.

As part of the downsizing of the Air Force after the reunification of Germany, the unit designated from October 1, 1986 Tactical Training Command of the Air Force in Portugal was decommissioned on December 16, 1993 and disbanded on March 31, 1994. Again, a number of former Air Force jets were handed over to Portugal.
