Valley of the Butterflies

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Up to 1000 butterflies can be found on 1 m³

The Valley of the Butterflies ( Greek Κοιλάδα των Πεταλούδων Kilada ton Petaloudon ) is located in the northwest of the Greek island of Rhodes .

The valley can be visited at three stations for a fee. The valley floor is easily accessible via closed paths, wooden walkways and stairs. In this valley the endemic subspecies ( Callimorpha quadripunctaria rhodosensis ) of the Russian bear can be found in large numbers. The reason for this is that this valley is populated by an important occurrence of the oriental sweetgum tree ( Liquidambar orientalis ), the resinous smell of which attracts butterflies. Only at second glance do you recognize the resting swarms of butterflies covering rocks and trunks. Despite the existing crowds, a decline in the bear moth population is observed, which is attributed to the disturbance from tourists. With the exception of lunchtime, the butterflies are active from mid-June to September. The crabs that live in the shallow water feed on the butterflies.
