The Batak Dam is located in the Pazardzhik Oblast , Bulgaria . It dams the Matnitsa to a reservoir. The dam was completed in 1959. The city of Batak is about 8 km south of the dam, the city of Peschtera about 10 km east of it.
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is an earth embankment dam with a height of 35 m above the foundation level . The length of the dam crest is 273 m. The top of the dam is at a height of 1107.8 m above sea level .
The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 90 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 14 m³ / s via the flood discharge.
Reservoir
With the normal storage target of 1105.7 m (max. 1106.1 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 21.07 km² and holds 310 million m³ of water - of which 302.3 million m³ can be used to generate electricity become. The minimum congestion target up to which electricity generation is still possible is 1087.33 m.
Peschtera power plant
A tunnel leads from the Batak reservoir through which the Peschtera hydropower plant, approx. 4.5 km away, is supplied with the necessary water.
