The Ranhados dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Ranhados ) is located in the Central Portugal region in the Guarda district . It dams the Torto , a left (southern) tributary of the Douro, to a reservoir. The small town of Penedono is about four kilometers southwest of the dam.
The project to build the dam began in 1982. The construction was completed in 1986. The dam is used to supply drinking water. It is owned by the Associação de Municípios do Rio Torto , the association of the districts of the Torto River.
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 41.4 m above the foundation level (38.4 m above the river bed). The top of the wall lies at a height of 719 m above sea level . The length of the top of the wall is 292 m and its width 3 m. The volume of the dam is 72,000 m³.
The dam wall has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 2.6 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, and a maximum of 215 m³ / s via the flood discharge. The design flood is 265 m³ / s; the probability of this event occurring has been determined to be once in 500 years.
Reservoir
With the normal storage target of 716 m (maximum 717.4 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.178 km² and holds 2.57 million m³ of water - 1.79 million m³ of this can be used. The minimum storage target is 701.3 m.
