The Tambora is the language of the Tambora culture , whose members had settled on the island of Sumbawa in what is now Indonesia. When the Tambora volcano erupted in 1815, this culture, and with it its language, was completely wiped out.

The language is only preserved through a list of words recorded before the eruption and published in 1817. Due to the lack of sources, the language cannot be classified, but it does not appear to be related to the surrounding Austronesian languages .
