The Tangermünder Tor is one of two preserved city gates of Stendal . It was built as part of the Stendal defense system in the 13th century and is the oldest gate building of a city fortification in northern Germany. Only the tower of the main gate remains.

The Romanesque field stone basement with a round arch passage has been preserved as the foundation of a late Gothic brick structure and is easily recognizable. The structure with a crenellated platform, a round tower tower and four corner turrets was built around 1440 and, just like the Uenglinger Tor , served representative purposes.

Originally, the gate tower could only be entered via the battlements of the city wall . After demolition of the city wall and ramparts in the 18th century, the access was therefore at a considerable height. In order to still allow access to the tower, a brick annex, which was controversial in terms of monument preservation, was built from 1987.

In 1945 the white flag of surrender was hoisted on the Tangermünder Tor , although fascists had tried several times to prevent this.

Tangermünder Tor is located on the southeastern edge of the old town and leads to the road to Tangermünde on the Elbe .
