Tanyuromys ( Gr .: “Tany” = long, “oura” = tail, “mys” = mouse) is a two species of rodent genus from the family of the burrowers (Cricetidae). Tanyuromys aphrastus , the type species occurs in Costa Rica and Panama and Tanyuromys thomasleei is only known from northern Ecuador .

features

Tanyuromys species have a head body length of around 15 cm, the tail is around 1.5 times as long as the body, i.e. around 20 cm. The fur is very long (18 mm), dense and soft. The hair is dyed gray on the body-hugging 85% of its length and has a brown tip. The peritoneum is less dense and light gray to reddish ocher in color. The muzzle is short and stocky, the skull wide and slightly indented. Older males develop a crest . The ears are small and when placed forward do not reach the eyes. They are sparsely covered on both sides with short, blackish, dark brown or reddish brown hair. The hind feet are long and slender and show the adaptation of the species to a terrestrial (ground-based) way of life. Their skin is light brown in color, and on top of them they are sparsely covered with light to dark brown hair. The claws are small, clearly curved, sharp and keeled. The tip of the claws is often reddish in color. The tail is thin, only slightly hairy and ends in a small tassel. The few hairs are black or brownish. The tail scales are arranged in rings (approx. 14 rings per cm). Females have four pairs of teats.

Systematics

Tanyuromys aphrastus , today the type species of Tanyuromys , was first scientifically described by Harris in 1932 and then assigned to the rice rats ( Oryzomys ). The species was later placed in the genus Sigmodontomys and in 2012 the genus Tanyuromys was introduced, as morphological and genetic comparisons have shown that the species does not form a common clade with the Alfaro water rat ( Sigmodontomys alfari ). Tanyuromys thomasleei , the second species of the genus, was described in mid-2018. Within the burrowers (Cricetidae) Tanyuromys belongs to the subfamily Sigmodontinae , which occurs exclusively on the American continent.
