This is the famous place in Japan where in AD 645 Fujiwara no Kamatari , who is buried here, met with Tennō Tenji to work out the plan to overthrow Soga no Iruka . The shrine was built for Kamatari's son Fujiwara no Fuhito . The Honden is the main shrine, adorned with magnificent ornaments, which houses the statue of Fujiwara no Kamatari.

Important festivals

  • October 11: Kakitsu Festival
  • 3rd Sunday in October: Kemari Matsuri (ball kicking); The festival owes its existence to the fact that the Tenno Tenji and Fujiwara no Kamatari met to kick the ball to forge plans to overthrow the Soga clan. The participants in the game are traditionally dressed in the old court clothes and try to prevent the ball from touching the ground with their feet.
