Dance Science Prize NRW

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The NRW Dance Science Prize has been awarded since 2001 and is the only scientific sponsorship award in Germany related to dance.

Historical development and involvement

The North Rhine-Westphalia Dance Science Prize was initiated in 2001 by the German Dance Archive in Cologne in memory of the pedagogue, publicist and founder of this archive, Kurt Peters , and has meanwhile become a trademark for the promotion of dance studies . When it comes to dance studies, Cologne has a good tradition: Aurel von Milloss established a dance studies department at the University of Music and Dance in 1961 , and in this context Kurt Peters was brought from Hamburg to Cologne with the dance archive in 1965. In 2000, the first professorship for dance studies in German-speaking countries was established at the university. The university is currently the only one nationwide to offer the possibility of a genuine doctorate in dance studies. The German Dance Archive Cologne has been an affiliated institute of the Cologne University of Music and Dance and as a cooperation partner of the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, and has also been a place for dance research and teaching. The Cologne University and the Dance Archive have also initiated a joint dance science research college.

The price

The award, endowed with a total of € 30,000, is awarded every five years in equal parts in the categories of outstanding work in the field of dance science basic and method research as well as practice-related dance science research . The prize has been awarded since 2016 by the Ministry for Innovation, Science and Research of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in cooperation with the German Dance Archive Cologne. The NRW Ministry of Science provides the prize money.

Goal setting

The aim of the award is on the one hand to make North Rhine-Westphalia known as a relevant location for dance studies and to strengthen the location. On the other hand, the award is intended to be an element of the promotion of young talent for outstanding young academics in the field of dance / dance studies.

The North Rhine-Westphalia Dance Science Prize aims to promote further research by the award winners in this subject area. With the prize money, the award-winners should also be given a boost for the implementation of another scientific project, which, together with the recognition of the prize, should support their careers in this field. Therefore, since 2006, applicants have had to submit a concept for a dance-related follow-up project in addition to the academic work completed within the last five years.

Tender

The award is advertised approximately one year before the award by publication on the dance science award's homepage. The jury is made up of professors from universities with dance studies, representatives of the German Dance Archive in Cologne and advisory representatives from the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Research of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. In 2016 the reviewers came from universities in Cologne, Leipzig, Munich, Essen and Salzburg. According to the announcement, they each determined a winner from each of the two categories. The deadline for submissions is July 1st of the year in which the award is made, the next award will be in 2021.
