Tarradale Castle (Scotland)
Tarradale Castle

Tarradale Castle is an abandoned low castle near Muir of Ord, probably a little northwest of today's Tarradale House .

King Robert the Bruce captured and destroyed the castle in 1308.

Tarradale House was built on the site of the former castle in 1680 and then expanded several times. Sir Roderick Murchison was born here in 1792 after his father bought the house on his return from Calcutta .

Until the 20th century the house belonged to Miss Amy Yule , a relative of the Murchisons. She had the library tower added and a fenced-in garden laid out.

After her death, the property was managed by the Murchison of Tarradale Trust and served as a recreation and study location for students from the Highlands. It was then sold to the University of Aberdeen .

Since 2004 the house has been in private hands again. The current owner had it extensively renovated and rebuilt.
