Tartaglia (Italian for "stutterer") is a character from the Italian impromptu theater, the Commedia dell'arte . The mask, developed in Naples around 1610, originally represented a Spanish official, no longer very young, mostly dressed in green, with oversized glasses, his tummy and his meaning in front of him. His dignity is impaired by his lack of command of the (Italian) language and his stuttering, which always gives ambiguity to his utterances. But he can also act as a police officer, judge, notary, tax collector, pharmacist, innkeeper or servant. Like Coviello or other masks in this popular comedy, it did not survive the 17th century.
