Maurice Sand

Jean-François-Maurice-Arnauld , Baron Dudevant , known as Maurice Sand (born June 30, 1823 in Paris , † September 4, 1889 in Nohant-Vic ), was a French writer and illustrator .

Life

He was the son of Baron Casimir Dudevant and the writer and feminist George Sand , whose pseudonym he took over. After his parents divorced, the father received custody, but he mostly lived with the mother. As a child he suffered from rheumatic complaints. In 1838/39 his mother therefore traveled to Mallorca with him, his younger sister Solange and Frédéric Chopin . Maurice's health improved, but Chopin's tuberculosis worsened.

Sand was a pupil of Eugène Delacroix . In addition to numerous novels, Sand was best known for his large-scale study of the Commedia dell'arte Masques et bouffons (comédie italienne) (1860). In the German-speaking world, his figurines were mainly used in Karl Riha's work Commedia dell'arte . Sand also tried a few other disciplines such as painting , geology, and biology .

In 1862 he married Lina Calamatta, a daughter of the copper engraver Luigi Calamatta, who was friends with his mother . The couple had two daughters Aurore (1866–1961) and Gabrielle (1868–1909). One son died in childbirth in 1864.
