Pocket dictionary

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The pocket dictionary is a dictionary that originally got its name from the concept of being able to be carried in a pocket. It is therefore reduced in format, but thanks to its extremely compressed presentation (for example, many abbreviations, small font size , thin printing paper ) it offers a maximum of information. A number of pocket dictionaries have grown in the course of new editions to an extent that goes beyond the original concept of mobility. In these cases, the designation is retained for marketing reasons.

The contrast to the pocket dictionary is the concise dictionary , which is much larger in size. In the case of translation dictionaries, in particular, publishers often offer a detailed manual dictionary in addition to the compact pocket dictionary.

In contrast to the term “hand dictionary” , the term “ pocket dictionary” is mainly used for language dictionaries and only very rarely for non-fictional dictionaries.
