Tau Kappa Epsilon ( ΤΚΕ or Teke , pronounced TKE or Tēk) is an international student association with an American tradition . It was founded on January 10, 1899 at Illinois Wesleyan University in Illinois . TKE has local chapters in the United States , Canada and a cooperation with the Corps of the Weinheim Senior Citizens' Convent (WSC). In the fall of 2016, there were 243 active chapters and colonies in the United States and Canada. 11,877 students are organized in the active local groups and over 272,000 members have been accepted so far. In 1928, TKE was one of the first American student associations to abolish “ hell week ”.
