Anesthesia (sensory disturbance)

An anesthesia ( ancient Greek αναισθησία anaisthesia , German , Non-sensation ' ) is generally a loss of sensation or numbness .

In neurology, anesthesia is a sensory disorder . It is the increase in hypoaesthesia (a decrease in sensation) and is in contrast to hyperesthesia (a state of increased sensitivity and pain, e.g. in the case of inflammation). It is also to be differentiated from paresthesia , mostly tingling abnormal sensations that occur in some nerve diseases ( neuropathies ).

The following sensory qualities can be disturbed (also isolated):

• Sensation of pain ( algesia )
• Sense of temperature ( thermesthesia )
• Sense of touch / touch ( surface sensitivity or epicritical sensitivity)
• Vibration sensation ( pallesthesia )
• Position and movement sense ( proprioceptive or deep sensitivity or kinaesthesia )

Insensibility or emotional numbness can also occur as a result of psychological trauma . The psychiatrist Ernst Kretschmer used the adjective anesthetic to describe the seeming insensitivity and indifference of schizoid personalities .
