A diving rope or diving line is a rope that is used as an aid when diving . The rope is mainly used for diving safety, for example as an ariadne thread to find the way back when diving in a cave . When ice diving and apnea diving , a guide rope is often used along the planned diving route, with which the diver can also connect with a safety line. In poor visibility conditions, a partner line can be used so as not to lose contact with the diving partner . Also for attaching signal buoysropes are used. When drift diving in white water , safety lines above or in the water can be useful.

When carrying a rope as part of diving equipment , it is wound onto a spool . Occasionally between rollers with crank (reel) , which as a winch can be used, and simple coil (spool) distinguished.
