A swash plate compressor , also known as a swash plate compressor , is a special type of compressor that is often used in the air conditioning of motor vehicles, colloquially they are often called air conditioning compressors .

In a swash plate compressor, the rotary motion of the drive shaft is transmitted to a swash plate. The axial movement of the swash plate is transmitted to the axially oscillating pistons via a non-rotating ring to which the connecting rods of several small pistons are attached or a cross loop with a split ball joint (see picture). These ensure a pressure build-up in individual small cylinders .
