1997 African Under-21 Football Championship / qualification
The qualification for the U-21 African Cup of Nations in 1997 was held to determine the seven finalists alongside hosts Morocco . The games took place between September 28, 1996 and January 5, 1997.

The registered teams determined the seven final round participants in two qualifying rounds in the knockout system with home and return legs. In the event of a tie, the away goal rule decided on progress. If there was also a tie, a penalty shoot- out was carried out without extra time .
First round
The first legs were played on September 28 and 29, the second legs on October 19 and 20, 1996.
