Taurianum

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Taurianum (also Taurinum , Tauriana or Tauroentum ) was an ancient city in the southern Italian region of Bruttium (today Calabria ). It was on a promontory north of Rhegion in the area of today's Palmi near today's village of Taureana.

Little is known about the city. Apparently it was settled during the Greek colonization, as an anecdote handed down by Cato shows, according to which first Aurunkians , then Achaeans who had returned from the Trojan War settled there.

The titular Taurianum of the Roman Catholic Church goes back to a late antique bishopric of the city .
