The Teatro Ignacio de la Llave , sometimes shortened to Teatro Llave , is a former opera house in the Mexican city of Orizaba , which is now used as a concert and event venue.

history

The initiative to erect the building came from General Ignacio de la Llave (1818–1863), who was born in Orizaba and was governor of the Mexican state of Veracruz in 1861/62 . It was designed by the architect Joaquín Huerta .

The opera singer María Jurieff performed at the grand opening in 1875 .

At the time, it was considered the most important theater in Mexico and the largest in the state of Veracruz.

In 1973 the building was badly damaged in an earthquake and was then closed for twelve years. It reopened in 1985, but its full restoration and recognition as a cultural asset of the city took until 2011.

Today the building is used for various cultural events and can accommodate 436 visitors.
