The Teatro Nacional de San Salvador is located in the historic center of the capital of El Salvador .

history

The current building replaces the old National Theater in San Salvador , which was destroyed by a major fire in February 1910.

The French architect Daniel Beylard was commissioned to build the theater at the end of 1910 through an international architecture competition sponsored by the Salvadoran state. The following year, on November 3, 1911, the reconstruction of the Teatro Nacional began. It was able to reopen six years later.

The property is located on Plaza Francisco Morazán . The building was constructed in the French Renaissance style with details from Rococo , Romantic and Art Nouveau . The 650 seats are distributed over three levels and the balcony-like presidential box ( Palco Presidencial ) is on the second level . The elliptical dome with an extraordinary crystal chandelier was designed by local artists. Other distinctive areas are the chamber hall and a foyer in the style of the French Folies Bergère .

Renovations were carried out in 1975 and 1976. In 1979 the building was listed and entered on the list of National Monuments.

The theater was badly damaged by the 2001 earthquake. The extensive construction and restoration work began in 2003 and lasted until mid-2008. On September 29 of the same year, the National Theater was reopened by President Antonio Saca González .
