history

There was no theater building in Las Palmas until the middle of the 19th century. Benito Lentini, a local Italian merchant, was very supportive , and the first Teatro Cairasco was built in 1842-1845 .

Meetings and appeals began in 1862 in order to raise funds for a more modern and spacious theater building from the citizens' funds. Construction work began in 1867, but it dragged on for more than two decades due to lack of funds. In 1890 the grand opening took place, the building was called Teatro Nuevo and later Teatro Tirso de Molina .

The theater around 1890

On the night of June 28, 1918, a major fire destroyed the theater. In 1921 the rebuilding began, this time with the community's own resources. The architect was first the community architect Fernando Navarro y Massenet and later (from 1923) Miguel Martín Fernández de la Torre, who completed the work in 1925–1928. The latter won his brother, the well-known painter Néstor, for the interior design. The ceremonial reopening took place on May 28, 1928. After a partial renovation in 1989, a fundamental modernization was carried out in 2004–2007. The theater has been a listed building since 1994.
