The Teatro Santi Giovanni e Paolo was a theater and opera house in Venice that was built in 1638 by the Grimani family . It was on Calle Testa near the Basilica of Santi Giovanni e Paolo , which gave the theater its name. It was considered one of the most beautiful opera houses in Venice in the 17th century. Operas by Francesco Cavalli and Claudio Monteverdi ( Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria 1640, L'incoronazione di Poppea 1642) were premiered here. It was closed in 1715.

A previous building elsewhere from 1635 was made of wood. In the theater, mainly speaking pieces, but also opera were performed, the first on January 20, 1639, the opera by Francesco Manelli La Delia o sia La sera sposa del sole (libretto Giulio Strozzi ). In the neighborhood was the Teatro Novissimo, where Giulio Strozzi worked at the time, but who moved to the Teatro Santi Giovanni e Paolo in 1642/43, with him the singers Barbara Strozzi and Anna Renzi (who played Ottavia in the premiere of the coronation of the Poppaea was) as well as the stage architect Giacomo Torelli , who developed a machine to change several sets at the same time.

In 1654 it was converted into an opera house by Carlo Fontana . It had 900 seats and five tiers with boxes. It was known for its splendid furnishings and innovative stage machinery and sets. In 1660 Marco Faustini became the impresario of the house and in the fifteen years that followed he was the leading opera house in Venice with the Teatro San Salvador of the Vendramin family .

The Grimani family had two other theaters, the Teatro San Samuele and the Teatro San Giovanni Grisostomo .
