history

The Salvadoran city council of Santa Ana held an architecture competition in 1890 to build a city theater. The winner was the architectural firm Sociedad Constructora Santaneca . The foundation stone was laid on February 9, 1902 by the then President of the Republic Tomás Regalado , who was born in the city in 1861.

The project managers were the architects Francisco Durini and Crístóbal Molinari, the construction company was the Sociedad Constructora de Occidente . In 1910 the work was finished and the Teatro de Santa Ana opened. The dome of the building is decorated with portraits of Rossini, Gounod, Wagner, Bellini, Verdi and Beethoven. The Art Nouveau stage curtain was made by the Italian artist Antonio Rovescalli.

The orchestra pit lies in front of the stage and the 800 seats for the audience. The theater also has several areas such as a foyer with cloakroom, sanitary facilities, bar and a conference room that is also used as an orchestra rehearsal room. The architectural details such as ornaments and paintings are all made by Italian artists.

The building has been a listed building since 1982 and is registered on the Monumento Nacional List. In 1987 the building was extensively renovated and the stage technology and lighting were modernized.
