Part of the Kingdom of Orleans

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kingdom of Orléans was a short-lived kingdom that was created by one of the Merovingian divisions. Clovis I died in 511 and his son Chlodomer inherited the area around Orléans . After Chlodomer himself died in 524, his increasingly powerful brothers Chlothar I and Childebert I appropriated the empire from 532. Childebert took over the former capital Orleans. For the first eight years after Chlodomer's death, his mother Chrodechild had ruled on behalf of her three grandchildren. The two older ones were murdered by their uncle Chlothar, the youngest could be saved and was taken to a monastery. When the empire was divided in 561, Guntram was awarded the city of Orleans including the conquered Burgundy empire. Although the city initially retained its importance as the capital, because of the significantly larger and culturally more distinct part of Burgundy, it was now referred to as the Franconian kingdom of Burgundy . After a few years, Guntram also relocated his residence to Chalon-sur-Saône .
