Telematics system

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Telematics systems are very often only associated with devices and applications that are used by transport and logistics companies in their vehicles. This is usually pursued with the aim of determining position data, giving the customer information about it at any time and thus being able to increase the quality of service.

The reason for this connection, which is particularly widespread on the Internet , is that the market for mobile information and communication technology is currently booming. Automobile manufacturers equip their cars and even more so their commercial vehicles with telematics systems or equip them with standardized connection options in order to be able to meet later requirements if necessary.

However, telematics is aimed at a field of application that is much wider than that. The use of such systems is usually viewed with skeptical looks for the time being, since the acquisition of the technology and the training of affected employees can be a time-consuming and costly undertaking. Due to the interlinking of information and telecommunications technology, however, the advantages of this investment (s) for added value in the company become apparent within a short period of time .

Functionalities

A telematics system is always used when it is planned to use technical devices to link at least two data processing systems to one another via a telecommunications system. Such a system must therefore exist at least via a transmitter , on the other side via a receiver and in between via a medium that guarantees the exchange of information. More specific functions of a telematics system depend on the type of system.

Current areas of application are building automation , logistics , e-commerce , education and medicine .

Use

The benefits of telematics systems of various types can vary. In principle , the aim is to automate certain processes using a telematics system . Economic benefits can be reflected in an increase in product quality, an increase in efficiency , a reduction in costs and an increase in customer satisfaction.
