The telescopic excavator is an earth moving device ( construction machine ) and a production machine for the metallurgical industry in the field of hydraulic excavators . It differs from a typical hydraulic excavator in that it has a rigid boom. These excavators are rarely found in the construction industry in Germany today, because although they can be used in a more versatile manner and work more precisely than conventional hydraulic excavators, they are more expensive to purchase. Telescopic excavators (also known as excavators) are indispensable in the metallurgical industry and are used in almost every metallurgical plant in the world. Because of their high tear strength, they are used there to break out refractory material and remove slag at temperatures of up to 1500 ° C.

Structure and functionality

The undercarriage of the telescopic excavator corresponds to that of a normal hydraulic excavator and is equipped with the usual crawler or wheel chassis.

The superstructure has a hydraulic unit, as all functions of the excavator are driven hydraulically. While a conventional hydraulic excavator has an arm with several joints, the boom of the telescopic excavator is only mounted in a joint in the superstructure and, like a crane boom, can be swiveled around 30 ° upwards or 90 ° downwards. The deflection is achieved by extending the telescopic boom in the axial direction. For this purpose, the boom consists of several hollow profiles that run into one another, which can be retracted and extended by internal hydraulic cylinders. This is where the name of the excavator comes from as the boom is reminiscent of the extension mechanism of old telescopes . As a rule, a reach of between 3.6 m and 15.4 m is possible with this boom shape.

The implement is attached to the end of the boom and can be pivoted radially to the boom axis.

Special areas of application

Telescopic excavators are suitable for the following tasks:

  • Normal shovel and backhoe work
  • Doing work with a dozer blade or normal backhoe equipment
  • Profile work in embankment and trench construction. Due to the straight guidance of the boom, creating exact profiles with special profile tools is much easier than with conventional hydraulic excavators. Particularly suitable for high slopes.
  • In tunnel and gallery construction as well as mining. Particularly suitable because of the low height of the excavator. Use is possible from a stud diameter of 3 m.
  • In the iron and steel industry for cleaning and excavation work on pouring and slag pans, converters, electric furnaces and blast furnace channels
  • Ripping and rock work with ripping hook as an attachment
