The late Romanesque Templar Chapel in Laon, France ( Aisne department ) is a former sacred building of the Knights Templar, which was dissolved in 1312 .

history

The Templars established a commandery in Laon in 1134 , which after the dissolution of the order passed into the possession of the Order of St. John (later the Maltese).

The octagonal chapel of the Commandery was built around 1140 as a central building based on the distant model of the rotunda of the Jerusalem Church of the Holy Sepulcher ; In addition, it received a porch and a two-part bell gable . However, buildings in the immediate vicinity, such as the no longer preserved chapel of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-Vincent in Laon, also stimulated the building. The chapel served the turn a little later in Metz built Templar chapel as a model.

Today the chapel is freely accessible; it belongs to the Musée d'art et d'archéologie de Laon and houses finds from medieval archeology.
