The Templeton Carpet Factory , now Templeton on the Green , is a former factory building and now a commercial building in the Scottish city ​​of Glasgow . In 1966 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The company James Templeton & Co produced since 1839 carpets. In 1857 the owner acquired the Glasgow site, which housed a mill from 1823. A new block, for which parts of the old mill were demolished, was built in 1869. The current main building was built in 1889 to a design by the Scottish architect William Leiper . On November 1 of the same year, the facade, which was completed up to the height of the fifth floor, collapsed in a storm. She fell through the roof of an adjacent factory building, killing 30 women workers. A commission of inquiry concluded on December 20, 1889 that although there were deviations from the approved construction plans, the completed wall would have been stable. The construction was completed later.

Flat loom houses were also built in the same construction phase. The brick buildings along London Road were built in 1897. Additional additions were made in the 1930s and 1960s. Around 1985 the factory, which had since been closed, was converted into a commercial building. Redundant buildings in the courtyard were demolished as a result.

The brick buildings are on the north edge of Glasgow Green near the People's Palace . The extraordinary Leiper wing on the west flank is designed in the Venetian neo-Gothic style. The red facade is designed with glazed bricks of different colors and faience elements . Some of the windows are ogival as tracery . Swallowtail pinnacles close the facade.
