Home remedies for cleaning carpets are mostly only used in private households. Different home remedies are used depending on the type of contamination. Potatoes, vinegar essence or damp salt are particularly suitable for cleaning large areas of dirt and to lighten the carpet. Light-colored carpets can be treated well with lemon juice, as it has bleaching properties. Refreshing towels help with minor soiling. For unpleasant smelling stains, shaving foam is the product of choice, as it removes both stains and odors.

Certain types of carpet, such as the colorfast rag rug, can also be washed in the washing machine. This type of cleaning is mainly used in private households.
Cleaning of different types of carpets
Different cleaning agents are used depending on the type of carpet, as not every cleaning agent is equally suitable for every type of carpet. Knotted carpets such as oriental carpets and Berber carpets are primarily cleaned with a vacuum cleaner, carpet brush or carpet beater. Damp cleaning is possible with a mild detergent that is applied with a brush.
Wool carpets can also be wet cleaned under certain conditions. A vacuum cleaner that is filled with a mild wool detergent is best suited for this. The advantage of this cleaning tool is that the detergent can penetrate deep into the carpet fibers while the dirty water is sucked off at the same time. After cleaning, the wool carpet should be hung outside to speed up drying.
Shaggy carpets are often found in living areas, but they are more difficult to clean than other carpets. They are not suitable for wet cleaning as they absorb a lot of moisture and therefore mold faster. Carpet foam is best for cleaning, as this can be applied to stains without soaking the carpet.
Process for cleaning carpets at cleaning companies
In the case of professional carpet cleaning, the first thing the cleaning company checks is whether and for which carpet cleaning the carpet fiber is suitable. If cleaning is possible, the carpet is first vacuumed to remove coarse dirt. Only then does the actual professional carpet cleaning follow, in which different cleaning methods are used depending on the degree of soiling. Carpets made of velor or loop pile are suitable for shampooing. The cleaning agent is applied in a circle using a special cleaning machine. With carpet spray extraction, however, the cleaning agent is applied in strips. This process is only suitable for short, less fiber-dense velor carpets. Depending on the type of carpet, cleaning companies also use manual stain removal. In some cases, cleaning companies also use impregnation to protect the carpet fibers from dirt and mechanical influences.
