Tesfaye Gesesse (* 1936 ) is an Ethiopian actor, director, writer, translator and theater manager. He is considered one of the most important representatives of modern theater in Ethiopia .

Life

For more than 40 years he has worked as an actor, director, writer, translator and theater manager. Tesfaye Gesesse wrote and staged numerous plays that were and are of considerable importance for the contemporary cultural landscape of Ethiopia.

Tesfaye Gesesse's career began in the 1950s when he staged his first plays in Addis Ababa . After studying theater in the USA , he was one of the founding members of the Creative Arts Center in Addis Ababa.

In 1974 he became director of the Hager Fikir Theater . After two years he was released and arrested there. The reason was the staging of his play "Iqaw", which was viewed by the then ruling Derg regime as anti-Derg and anti-revolutionary.

In 1976 Tesfaye Gesesse became director of the Addis Ababa National Theater, then professor at Addis Ababa University . Today he still works as a publicist, translator and theater director.
