A test chart is measured with a spectrophotometer

A test chart , also called a characterization chart, is required in order to create the device characterization for a scanner, printer or camera in the first step when setting up a color management system.

A test chart consists of a limited number of color fields, the composition of which is known from the process colors cyan, magenta, yellow and black.

Test charts are made available by various organizations with the aim of using a uniform chart for all profiling tools. For example the "ECI 2002" of the European Color Initiative . The best-known representative is likely to be the "IT 8". Another test chart is the "TC3.5".

There are two types of test charts: ordered (visual) and unordered (random), in which the color fields are arranged randomly.
